What is it about?
The inverse function reverses : from we get . This only works if every value occurs exactly once – every horizontal line meets the graph at most once. That is certainly the case if is strictly monotonic. on all of is not invertible (); restricted to its inverse is , restricted to it is . Monotonicity is sufficient but not necessary: is invertible (it is even its own inverse).
To find : solve for , then swap and . Graphically this is a reflection in : becomes , and domain and range swap. Writing for the domain and for the range of : , (German textbooks write for the range, from Wertemenge). This is how arises from : and , so is defined only for .
Reflecting the tangent swaps the legs of the slope triangle, so for and :
If , the inverse has a vertical tangent at , e.g. at .
Try it
- Square root: drag or , then press “Reflect in y = x” and watch the graph flip over, the intervals on the axes and the columns of the table.
- Line: press “Working step by step”.
- x² on all of ℝ: sweep the horizontal line, then switch to a branch.
- eˣ and ln x and the vertical tangent.
- 1/x and, as an outlook, restricted sine.

Task 3: Vertical tangent
Load taskWhy is not differentiable at ? Find for .
Show solution
: the horizontal tangent becomes vertical. and , so . Show
Ideas for the classroom
- Use the views in order: “Invertible?” → “Reflect in y = x” → “Derivative of f⁻¹” leading to .
- Draw a graph on a transparency and flip it along , then compare with the animation.
- With
show=0andinv=0the pictures work as exercises. - Common stumbling blocks:
- confusing with ;
- forgetting to swap and , or forgetting the restricted domain (sign of );
- thinking “strictly monotonic” requires everywhere ( has );
- evaluating at instead of in .
