What is it about?
A vector describes a translation; it is written as a column and drawn as an arrow. Arrows of equal length and direction represent the same vector.
- Addition (tip to tail): attach to the tip of ; the sum is the diagonal of the parallelogram. Components are added.
- Subtraction: ; the difference also points from the tip of to the tip of .
- Scaling: is parallel to and times as long; negative reverses the direction.
- Linear combination: all lie in one plane (if , are not parallel).
- Connecting vector: (“tip minus tail”), midpoint , length , e.g. .
- Find a linear combination: set , (or drag the tip in the plane) so that . If is not in the plane, it is impossible.
- Parallelepiped: , , span it; every corner is a sum of edges, e.g. . If the three vectors are coplanar, it is flat.
- Unit vector: , e.g. has length and .
- Centroid: divides every median ; divides in the ratio .
- Random walk: the sum of random unit steps does not depend on their order; on average .
